Abstract. 1. Nectar-foraging honeybees ( Apis mellifera ) on lavender ( Lavandula stoechas ) appear to forage so as to maximise net energy return from foraging bouts; however, evidence from other studies suggests that foraging has a detrimental effect on survival, due at least in part to physiological deterioration of the flight mechanism. But foragers also acquire wing damage during foraging, which may increase foraging effort and reduce foraging lifespan.
2. The accumulation of damage over time and its effects on foraging flight and flower choice were studied in the field using a system in which the criteria for flower preference by foragers was known from previous work. Wing damage accumulated exponentially over time and resulted in foragers becoming less choosy about the flowers they visited.
3. Damage added experimentally contributed independently to the effect on choosiness. Effects of wing damage (natural and added experimentally) were also independent of those of a relative measure of age, which related in an inconsistent way to changes in foraging preferences. 相似文献

In the River Great Ouse, 0+ roach, bream, chub, bleak and gudgeon were each divided into three' ecospecies' on the basis of their morphology: young larvae, old larvae and juveniles. Ecologically similar species were positively associated and dissimilar species were negatively associated. All ecospecies, except juvenile bleak preferred water < 1 m deep, within 6 m of the bank with some plant cover. Habitat use was similar for all species. It is suggested that this habitat offers increased growth rate, reduced predation risk and increased food abundance to all species, and that species overlap is due to complementary habitat use rather than aggregation. During the early larval period all species fed predominantly upon rotifers and diatoms. During the late larval period there was a switch to Cladocera, primarily Chydoridae and Ceriodaphnia sp., and chironomid larvae. Species-specific dietary selection was evident during the juvenile period, with roach feeding primarily upon aufwuchs, bream upon Cladocera, chub upon Diptera, and gudgeon upon Copepoda. 相似文献

Details are presented relating to chimpanzees' choices between two sympatric species of termites,Macrotermes lillijeborgi andM. vitrialatus, as food in the Campo Animal Reserve, southwest Cameroon, West Africa. An attempt was made to determine the various factors
that affected such choices. The two species of termites seemed to have almost the same value in terms of ecological factors.
However, chimpanzees fed almost exclusivelyonM. lillijeborgi, using digging sticks and fisching probes, during the study period which extended from the end of August to the middle of
January, with their feeding activity showing peak at the beginning of the rainy season. By contrast,M. vitrialatus was rarely eaten in spite of the ease with which such prey could be obtained, namely, by desctruction of termite mounds by
hand, without the need for tools. The reason that the chimpanzees discriminated between the two species of termite cannot
be explained in terms of ecological factors such as size of prey, seasonal differences in termite activity, etc. Sticks used
as tools were fairly uniform in size and character, mainly because of physical constraints related to the structure of termite
mounds, and the brush-like ends of sticks seemed to be incidentaly byproducts of the chimpanzee's choice of plant species.
Ecological factors could provide chimpanzees with a basis for the use of some kind of tool and help them modify it, while
other factors, for example, something akin to leisure or the chimpanzee's interest in use of a tool, could provide an opportunity
for inventing some tool-using behavior or for maintaining such behavior. These different factors, not being exclusive of one
another, might affect the invention and maintenance of tool using-behavior at different phases. It is possible that chimpanzee's

The prey preferences of African lions (Panthera leo) in SerengetiNational Park, Tanzania, were examined in three ways. First,lion encounter rates with prey types were measured and comparedwith a random sample of the prey population. Lions encounteredmore wart hogs (Phacochoerus aethiopicus), Grant's gazelles(Gazella granti), wildebeests (ConnochaeUs taurinus), and zebras(Equus burchelli) than expected. Second, preferred prey typesof lions were identified using conditional logit analysis. Lionspreferred to hunt small prey groups, groups that were closerthan 200 m, and groups that contained wart hogs, wildebeests,or zebras. Third, a risk-minimization optimal foraging modeland a rate-maximization model were used to predict lion preferences.The foraging theory models predict that preferences should changewith season and with lion group size.
